Slow Talker

Twice in recent days I almost said something. Almost. But then, for whatever reason, I stopped. I walked away from the situation. I waited, and I thought about it.

In both cases, that mental space, that pause provided perspective that colored my thinking and gave me greater understanding. And in both situations, I was glad I had not spoken too soon.

These experiences have only re-confirmed to me the divine wisdom of James’ admonition:

“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger…” (James 1:19)

Why do I always seem to forget this truth?
