Home Life: An Easy Way to Check My Soul

How I fare at home says a lot about how I’m faring.

Home life is a kind of soul barometer. If I am slow to serve and quick to bristle, I know my pace is off; I know my soul is thin.

If chores begin to pile up, if the grass goes to seed, if the mail sits on the counter too long, I know I’m out of balance.

If conversations are short, if play is unimaginative and uninspired, if my Sabbath drones, I know my soul tank is approaching empty.

Of course, perfection is not the goal here. Work and wellness ebb and flow. But I am learning home life can be an early warning sign, like a slight trimmer, like shortness of breath. And I would do well to heed it’s signal.

Why?

Because work life can be deceptive. I can keep it together at work. I can sail through work. I can have successes at work. But home life tells no lies.

So I am learning to listen to my home life.

How about you? What’s a sure sign you’re approaching empty? What are the early warnings you’re running thin? Leave a comment.
